Tour Aspen
The building that currently houses Aspen Family Center was constructed in the mid-1860s by John Wagner who also founded the Wagner Brewing Company that occupied most of E. Poplar St. Only one of the original brewery buildings is still standing.
The Flood of 1913:
The current building survived the flood. Photos from that time period have survived showing the river reached the property but stopping short of the building.
Offering affordable Mental Health Counseling and Neurofeedback
The building remained in the Wagner Family until 1931 when the Business Girls Association took possession. The Business Girls Assoc. served as a home for girls attending business college in the area. The Assoc. also hosted the Sidney Ladies National Organization of Women’s Christian Temperance Union meetings.
In 1965 the Senior Citizens Center occupied a portion of the building not in use by the Business Girls Association.
In 1973 the Business Girls Assoc. sold their portions of the building to the Kirby Photography Studio. The Shelby County Senior Citizens group continued to occupy the space until 1975.
The Kirby Studio became Kirby’s Tackle and Gun Shop in 1985 and continued under this name until 2005 when it was renovated and became the new home of Aspen Wellness Center.
Great care was taken during renovations to keep as many original fixtures as possible and to replace those that couldn’t be restored with period originals. The chandelier in the entry is still fitted with turn-stops from the original gas lighting.
Aspen Wellness Center re-branded to Aspen Family Center in 2013 and continues to provide service in this historic location.
